Industry News

In this issue we focus on Field Services
Today’s work force is increasingly on the move. AMR Research estimates 35% of all workers are currently mobile, and their numbers are rapidly rising. IDC predicts 66% of the work force will be mobile by December 2006, and approximately three quarters of U.S. organizations have adopted wireless technologies by mid 2005. Organizations must now be prepared to support "anytime, anywhere" computing.

Mobile organizations can be more competitive, more collaborative, and more agile - not just keeping pace with the competition, but moving a step ahead. According to Gartner, 80% of key business processes will involve the exchange of information among mobile workers. This type of agility requires that information flows both ways - management needs insight into field operations, while mobile workers need access to up-to-date data and applications.

Taking Field Service Applications into the Field
By Beth Ellyn Rosenthal
In the world of service, value is often perceived - if not generated - in the field. The technician at a customer site is a critical point of contact between a service company and its customers. During a call, the service company can earn the customer's respect and further a long-term relationship, or potentially discredit the company and damage the relationship. To be fair, one service call isn't usually the difference between a happy customer and a dissatisfied one, but a series of these interactions helps to determine the view that the customer has of its service provider. Despite everything that goes on behind the scenes to prevent service problems from occurring in the first place, and without regard to the office and depot functions, a customer's perception of value still comes primarily from the perception of the field personnel.

The Mobile Imperative
By Jack E. Gold
Most organizations now realize that their employees will increasingly be working outside of their brick and mortar buildings, and will need to be enabled with corporate back office and productivity applications no matter where the user may be located. This requires companies to become "mobilized". Indeed, mobile and wireless deployment is being consistently placed within the top 5 initiatives of the next 3 years in surveys of business executives. Yet despite this high level of visibility, many challenges exist in defining, building and deploying mobile solutions, and understanding which workers should be enabled with such capability.

Technology News

In this issue we focus on Mobile Technologies.
Mobile working - that is, the act of getting the job done while away from the primary workplace - has been a growing trend in corporations. The case for extending enterprise applications to mobile workers at the point of activity is compelling for many businesses. Mobile computing solutions can generate substantial cost savings and competitive advantages, in addition to increasing the ROI of existing systems. Achieving this ROI often involves creating critical applications in a short time with minimal new IT resources. Mobile technologies are fundamentally transforming the way business is conducted. From how workers communicate and stay current, to the company’s ability to push the most up-to-date data into the hands of those in the field who can do the most with it, mobile solutions are offering companies the ability to create a new freedom and flexibility for their corporate operations.
